RFID TRACKING

Metano Limited are an intermediate bulk container (IBC) rental company. They approached us to develop a bespoke radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking system. The purpose of this system is to automate the tracking of assets that are on hire to customers.

Purpose

There is a current system in place that enables users of it to track assets as they travel around the physical system. At the moment this means that when assets arrive at any location, somebody must physically check ID numbers and mark them as having arrived in a web interface. Aside from this there are multiple systems in place for managing different aspects of the day to day running of the overall system. This means that billing is handled separately from the actual tracking of the assets and so on. The new system is to consolidate all of the day to day running functionality into a single easy to use interface with extended functionality.

Using the system it is now possible to manage and keep track of the following information:

• Assets
• Contacts
• Contracts
• Orders
• Movements
• Filling
• Cleaning
• Maintenance
• Testing

The system utilises cost effective hand held technology to track the movements of assets around the physical systems. 20,000+ assets will have a passive RFID tag attached to them, when assets are being shipped their tags will be scanned and a movement created using this list. The movement has a source and destination as well as contract information associated with it. Receiving a movement is an identical process of scanning the tags as they arrive. This now allows all involved parties to see exactly at what point in the system their assets are. Using this semi real-time method of tracking also enables billing to be calculated on the fly. Manual methods also exist to allow for unforeseen circumstances.

Security

All users are provided with a user name and password. This information is used to track individuals access permissions and the information which they have the ability to view, edit and process. This means that everyone who is involved in the day to day running of the system can have access to the information to make the whole process run a lot smoother.

Status

We have just completed testing of the bespoke mobile RFID application and are in the process of starting an international roll out.
